⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Kazuma Asougi
Age: 23
Canon: Dai Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney)
Canon Point: Case 2 ~ The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band

Background: On the Ace Attorney Wiki
(Note: The nature of his mission is as of yet not divulged by the series--as such he will completely avoid bringing it up, while eliciting the canon response of appearing very grim, which here would negatively affect the surroundings. On a more minor note, this will also prevent me from having him talk about the state of their Japanese justice system.)

Personality: Asougi is by all intents and purposes an archetype of character in his series that you would expect to be incredibly uptight; with a straight back and confident stride, the young man carries the pride of his family line with him in the form of his inherited sword, the Karma, by his side. He's an ambitious straight-A student who's worked hard enough to also be a qualified lawyer who aims for nothing less than the best possible outcome, doesn't beat around the bush with his beliefs, whose accomplishments are often talk of the college campus, and dreams big enough to be able to change an entire country by the work of his own hands. Someone so on top of everything must keep his confident little nose up in the air too, scoffing at everyone in the world below him right? --Well, no, not... really. Unless you're actively trying to dislike Asougi on the on-set for whatever reason and warping your perception of his attitude, he's basically the opposite of a snob. He is the total package anti-snob, if you will.

It's probably hard to even legitimately envy his accomplishments because Asougi's usually so nice. Where you expect his aura to be intimidating, his is instead refreshing and warm; where you'd expect him to be snippy at others' less-informed suggestions, he is receptive, and even in turning them down would normally be very polite about it. Asougi has had a lifestyle of discipline that extends to a wholehearted humility, frequently if not always downplaying praise directed at him. He sees himself as a mere gear in a much bigger mechanism; a hard worker he may be, but he's no more important than anyone else, and still has a long way to go. In contrast to the way he talks (or rather--doesn't) about his own achievements, he's fully encouraging to those he likes so that they may realize their own potential, willing to generously lather on the praise, sometimes to make sure they don't get discouraged comparing themselves to him. bff, he's looking directly at you JUST SAYING

Most would immediately associate Asougi with strength and steadfast beliefs, but he has a certain kind of gentleness too, that beside his supportive nature manifests in small smiles and watchful glances. With his best friend Naruhodou, he additionally pokes at him with good-natured teasing and can bark a bright, cheerful laugh. He doesn't lack in a sense of humor; even if he's probably sooner the guy who would take everything too seriously. In addition, despite what you would be led to believe--Asougi does not see things such as rules and people painted in an absolute "black and white". Though it would inadvertently cause a great tragedy to befall upon him, he listens to the pleas of a runaway thief, and from her story he understood her reasons for what she did. Even with guilty parties, he doesn't jump to conclusions, or brand them in his mind only by their crimes. Humans aren't perfect, and he isn't expecting them to be, but he is still a man of the law who will only try to actively cultivate good character if he can help it.

Not to say he never dislikes people and doesn't have a harsh side--in fact, Asougi can be extremely cold, but only when given valid reason to behave that way. Once Asougi deems someone unworthy of his respect he doesn't waste his breath trying to get on their good graces, which are of no value to him. He can be blunt to the point of coming across as downright rude and shameless of this fact. People's opinions on him mean very little if he's on the higher ground in the morality argument, and he is neither fettered by the consequential insults directed at him nor intimidated by the idea of making enemies. While not actively confrontational otherwise, Asougi cannot be expected to keep quiet when aware of an injustice, he would be firm in acting out the philosophy that change must begin within oneself, and with that, he cannot back down. He may (and probably will) regard smaller problems as sternly as larger ones. Incidentally, his kindness and harshness are not mutually exclusive, he's also going to deliver the very same judging stares or sideways glances and lectures even to his own friends, when they try to get away with "lesser sins". After all, he expects better from them... To help them grow, he will act like their overbearing no-fun parent if he must!

It is in part due to confidence in his own abilities and determination, but Asougi is always willing to give his all in anything, to the point of self-sacrifice. Carrying in him a full intention to see things through, he doesn't take kindly to being ripped away from a duty. A clear example of this is in DGS' first case, Professor Mikotoba knew of the delicate position of Asougi's exchange program and planned to remove him from the defense, because upon a loss here his exchange program would be cancelled. Asougi is miffed to discover Naruhodou learned of this (and he had kept it secret on purpose for that reason), and while he doesn't lose his cool meeting up with Professor Mikotoba during the court recess later, Asougi defiantly and succinctly declared that he would have no worth as a person if he would abandon his friend in his time of need, and he would voluntarily withdraw from the exchange program if his friend would be found guilty. A trip, mind you, he had been toiling and preparing for long before he even met Naruhodou. There was no hesitation in Asougi's voice; after all, his trust in the defendant ran deep (as he put it, in each way "as a man, as an attorney, and as a friend"). The odds don't scare him, he will still fight with the full intention of what's right winning out in the end.

But what of his general way of dealing with issues that are more exclusively his own? Being a vastly independent and proud person, Asougi is absolutely an individual who would try to shoulder things by himself, assured that he is (1) able to solve his own problems, and (2) because of this, he needn't trouble anyone else. He has a great secret mission THAAAAT I cannot yet write about because it's not yet revealed by game canon, alas. But, it seems to have taken him substantial effort for him to even attempt bringing it up with his best friend--and then, he changes his mind, not very reassuringly shrugging it off and calling it nothing. This is the double-edged sword of self-reliance, adding onto the fact that his normally excellent control over everything (and lack of very obvious tells) make him someone nobody would worry about. Asougi would most definitely suffer alone over pouring his heart out if he can help it... and he'd be completely okay with that, to him it's better than the alternative.

Now that we're done talking about his cool points and the serious parts--let's talk about where he's a dweeb. Yep, Asougi at times can be as much of an achiever as he is an outright loser, with only himself to blame. Being so thorough with his training to meet his lofty self-imposed standards, failures hit him harder than they would the average person, scarring him and completely throwing him off the refined way he usually carries himself. Asougi is absolutely horrified by ANY instances of public humiliation, and the best example of this is of an earlier time a year prior, when you find out how pathetically BAD he is at tongue-twisters. So great was his passionate and eloquent speech, up until the last line, a tongue-twister... that it traumatized him forever trying to correct himself for a whole five minutes, falling to his knees as his audience laughed at him.

He got so upset by this he sought out and approached the one who beat him in the speech contest (the one who would become his best friend, surprise surprise), and was shocked to hear Naruhodou was actually fond of tongue-twisters and had them as a hobby. Asougi brags that after that time, he had trained himself so thoroughly with a tongue-twister until his tongue bled, and once he perfected it he tied around his signature red headband as a symbol to remind him of his failure and triumph... only to be promptly informed that he had memorized a tongue-twister with the entirely wrong noun. He valiantly attempts the correct one--and failing in two syllables flat, in frustration Asougi screams. As Naruhodou put it, once you learn its origin story, suddenly Asougi's headband isn't so cool anymore. There is of course, such a thing as disproportionate determination that would just horribly backfire on you. (Kazuma Asougi, everyone.)

To sum it up from the start: Asougi is most definitely written as an upstanding student and dear friend, featuring either or both sides of gentle and harsh depending on what better fits the the situation; not entirely reserved, but also most definitely not bearing it all out in the open, only letting very few in--and struggling even with that. He holds a deep faith in himself, his friends, and the work of his hands. Holding a lot of promise he always had dreams and plans to make them reality. Without looking back he would move forward to forge his path, burying his uncertainty deep down. Asougi was a beacon of hope partially shattered with his abrupt death, but his lasting influence moves the best friend that he had left behind to carry his blade and fight on in his stead, his legal assistant smiling that it was what he would have wanted. Asougi may be gone, but he won't be forgotten anytime soon...

Especially with otherworldly forces just as suddenly bringing him back. Oh.

Abilities:
✔ Deeply studious and intelligent through a variety of subjects beside law, fluent in English
✔ Charismatic and well-versed, remains calm under pressure
✔ Equally attentive to smaller details as big ones (his journal entries are for example down to the hours and minutes)
✔ Well-practiced with the sword enough for at least self-defense, even if extensive combat experience is unlikely
✔ His headband's also been fluttering in non-existent wind before Empatheias, yes

Alignment: Sosyne -- Asougi has an interesting combination of being hotblooded and passionate in what he believes in, but also having a cool head and general temperament. This allows him to make (mostly) rational decisions even while having strong feelings about something, though now and then impulses take over. Perfectionism being a key part of his personality, he will even have instances where small mistakes end up upsetting him more than they should, and this alignment best symbolizes his own standards of harmony.

Other: Asougi will be missing certain things on his person: his headband, his katana, and his armband. He will receive the first two things again from Naruhodou when he meets with him, but will insist his friend keeps the last item when he learns he became a lawyer. He'll also have his student uniform's mantle. He technically arrives to Verens after his aforementioned belongings had been taken as mementos, so it was sometime after he had died.
